Almost everyone frets about what to wear for your business portraits. While there’s no one-size-fits-all (get the pun?) there are a few considerations to keep in mind when choosing what to bring to your session.
Business casual for women and men is a great place to start. For women, I recommend a business dress with a matching or complimentary colored jacket or sweater. However, if your style or profession calls for a less “corporate look” a simple boat or v-neck styles top looks elegant and casual on just about everyone, no matter your size or shape.
For men, I suggest a light-colored, button-down dress shirt and slacks with a complimentary tie and jacket. If you wouldn’t wear a tie and jacket to meet a new client, then and going truly business casual, I recommend crew neck t-shirt under a dress jacket. Colors for the crew neck and jacket should be in muted colors like gray, navy or brown. They look great on everyone. Also, a knit sweater with no pattern in small knit will also look good.
It sort of goes without saying, but stick with clothes that fit. Squeezing into a dress or suit that’s too small will only make you feel uncomfortable and it will show in your business portrait. Same goes for clothing that’s too big. If you’ve lost weight and you’re still wearing your old outfits you’ll look unkempt and unprofessional. Not at all the brand you’re trying to sell!
And for everyone, please, please avoid loud patterns, stripes, logos or “messages.” If you’re still not sure about what to wear call me or check my Pinterest page for some examples or get the guide to portrait branding.
